An update about the database
A note on the most decisive update work done so far on Ethnoarchitecture.com, the database of vernacular types. The database will actually start, as the entry explains, as a database of indigenous types, which will be in the end, as the entry also explains, actually a database of linguistic groups. Which brings us back to the old connection that the term vernacular has with language.
This note was written two and a half months ago, but I hadn't had time to upload it, precisely because of being immersed in the work of translation that the note mentions.

Lessons on energy after a trip cross-country
A note on lessons learned, written when leaving Tehachapi, the last station of the trip at the outer edge of the Mojave Desert. Took a long time to clean it up and upload it, but here it is.

A World Habitat Awards submission
I have submitted, on behalf of SIGUS, the project of San Cayetano - Istepeque to the World Habitat Awards 2005 competition. That was an urban design project developed in partnership with local organizations by Reinhard Goethert, Susana Williams, Melody Tulier and I, last year in El Salvador.
Some of the key features of the project were that it worked (so many times community projects don't!), it worked very rapidly (one year between preliminary workshops and final building), it was participative (most importantly, it involved children in that participation in the role of designers), and it proposed to switch the role for architects in such participation: the community would design, and we would only be their "consultants."
By the end of the summer we will know if we made it into the finals.

New Voices revised abstract
Sent the revised abstract and bio to the New Voices conference. Will post it here soon.
I have posted it on March 15, 2005 (under the "read more" link at the right). I might not go to this conference, however. Last night I received even better news with the acceptance letter to Berkeley's PhD program. This conference is a perfect opportunity to show this work and get feedback from just the right people, but I should better save the airplane ticket for the program's information session two weeks after...

Starting up this project
Philadelphia. Working on a photo-weblog for another project, I decide those templates could be developed further as a much-delayed project of a personal online photo-album. Spend the rest of the holidays working on it, and the enthusiasm for that is really helpful (J's company does the rest of the healing work) for the uneasiness of not having been able to travel to Colombia and spend Christmas at home, for the third year in a row.
