Description What was more the consequence of extreme poverty because of colonialism ended up typified by early ethnographers as a natural and unavoidable condition. That is the context in which this studio-posed photograph appears published in Otis T. Mason's "Woman's Share in Primitive Culture" (1899). The book, in fact, describes the members of Australian native groups as "the lowest people on the face of the earth."
